When Does Earnings Management Matter? Evidence across the Corporate Life Cycle for Non-Financial Chinese Listed Companies

This empirical study applies organizational lifecycle theory, referencing Adizes among the foundational lifecycle scholars, to examine how earnings management incentives and behaviour differ across five developmental stages of Chinese-listed firms. The paper finds that the propensity for earnings manipulation peaks during the growth stage as defined by Adizes-aligned lifecycle criteria.
